Plans about new low fare terminal in Copenhagen Airport
04-07-2008
Location and infrastructure:
An investor group has prepared a plan for a brand-new terminal in Copenhagen Airport to attract new budget routes to Copenhagen, writes the news agency Ritzau.
The new terminal can be finished in the spring of 2010 and the goal is that the passengers are to arrive from their cars straight to the plane in 20 minutes. In the beginning it is planned to compete directly with Copenhagen Airport.
“Yes, the idea is to build in all circumstances. It has not been approved by Copenhagen Airport. They were informed about the project recently and at first they may not be so happy to have competition, says Managing Director of the project Mogens Kornbo.
It is with the EU law in their hands that the investors will build the new terminal whose name is to be Terminal A.
“It is like this; in 1996 the EU approved a directive about creating the possibility of competition. It is with this directive in our hands that we believe we can be allowed to establish a business in the location. However, it is also a good idea for Copenhagen Airport that the facilities are increased, which I think that the airport will realise,” says Mogens Kornbo who is former Operation Director in Copenhagen Airport.
According to Mogens Kornbo it is estimated to cost approximately EUR 50 million to build the new terminal. They already have one supporter in the airline company Sterling.
It is a groundbreaking project especially directed to companies such as Sterling. For some time we have wanted facilities such as the ones planned in the new Terminal A, says General Manager Reza Taleghani in Sterling.
Moreover, Copenhagen Airport has also looked into the possibilities of establishing budget facilities during the last six months.
“As part of this survey we have appointed a consultant with expertise within budget companies. Our analyses are aiming both on establishing the right facilities for the customers of all our airline companies and for cargo. We have set up very ambitious targets for the facilities to meet the budget companies’ requirements about low costs and efficient passenger facilities. It was only yesterday that I heard about the other project and in the next few days I will analyse all and every possibilities for offering even more attractive solutions for the airline companies,” says Brian Petersen who is General Manager for Copenhagen Airports A/S in a comment to the proposal, which the airport received from the investor group.
